Chloe Zhao’s ‘Nomadland’ Named Best Picture by Toronto Film Critics Association – The Hollywood Reporter


The Toronto Film Critics Association named Chloe Zhao’s nomadland as its best picture of 2020 as the American road movie continued its run as a contender at the start of awards season.

On Sunday, Zhao won Best Director for nomadic land, which also won Frances McDormand the Best Actress trophy for her role in the film, while Riz Ahmed won Best Actor for his performances in The Sound of Metal.

Elsewhere in the acting categories, Daniel Kaluuya won Best Supporting Actor for his role as Black Panther Chairman Fred Hampton in Warner Bros. Judas and the Black Messiah, while Maria Bakalova took home the Best Supporting Actress crown for her performance in Borat Next Movie, alongside Sacha Baron Cohen.

wolf walkers, the final episode of Tomm Moore’s Irish folk trilogy airing on AppleTV+, was voted Best Animated Feature by Toronto critics, and Bacura, director Kleber Mendonca Filho’s neo-Western folk tale won Best Foreign Language Film.

Other winners include black bodies short filmmaker Kelly Fyffe-Marshall as Best Emerging Artist; by Alexandre Nanau Collective, a film on hospital corruption following the fire of a nightclub, named Best Documentary of 2020; Radha Blank The 40 year version, with Lena Waithe as producer, winning Best First Feature; and Best Screenplay for Lee Isaac Chung’s Comedy-Drama Minari.

Toronto critics tweeted the winners and finalists live via their official website #TFCAawards Twitter account. This year’s vote in the pandemic era included theatrical and streaming films scheduled for release through March 31, 2021.
