Imphal: Governor of Manipur, La Ganesan, on Saturday handed out the 14th Manipur State Film Awards 2022 to eminent film personalities of Manipur. The award ceremony was held at Manipur State Film Development Society (MSFDS) Palace Auditorium, Palace Compound in Imphal.

Addressing the assembly, the Governor said the awards were given to encourage people working in the state’s film industry. He said filmmakers should make films that would show the diverse and rich culture of Manipur which would not only help save the culture of the state but also raise awareness among those living outside the state.

The unsung heroes of Manipur can be known to the world through such powerful media, he said.

Governor Ganesan added that cinema is a very powerful weapon to reach the masses. The reach of the message through cinema is very strong and access is also easy. Many ideas and points of view expressed through films are easily accepted by people. Films that highlight social issues easily reach the masses and the whole issue attracts more support.

Congratulating the winners, the Governor urged them to make more films that will be remembered by all. Hailing the efforts exerted in organizing the Manipur State Film Awards distribution ceremony by MSFDS, he commended their sincere works to promote arts and culture in the state.

Organizing such events will boost the morale of everyone involved in the state’s film industry, he said.

The Governor also expressed his confidence that the efforts of the MSFDS will help raise the level of cinema and also encourage young artists and technicians in Manipur.

The Governor presented the Lifetime Achievement Award to renowned filmmaker Laimayum Banka Sharma in recognition of his contribution to Manipuri Cinema. Various film awards in different categories were also distributed at the ceremony.

Ningthoujam Shilheiba (Dinesh) and Ningombam Biju Devi won best actor (male and female) in the feature film category.

Famous transgender actor Bishesh Huirem also received the Best Actor award for the movie “Apaiba Leichi”, while Gurumayum Bonny Sharma, popularly known as Bonny, received the Best Supporting Actor (Male) award.

Debendro Thiyam Ayekpa Singee Pukhei received the award for best non-fiction while Eikhoigi Yum by Romi Meitei received the award for best feature film at the awards ceremony.

Water Resources Minister Awangbou Newmai, while presiding over the ceremony, said Manipuri cinema had improved significantly. More efforts should be made to develop the quality of films so that they can compete internationally, he added.

Inspired by the prestigious National Film Awards, the Manipur State Film Award was instituted in 1984 to encourage the production of films of aesthetic and technical excellence and social relevance, contributing to the understanding and appreciation of the cultures of different communities living together in Manipur in cinematic form, while promoting the unity and integrity of the state.

The award carries a Maibi Memento, cash prizes and a citation.

The 14th edition of the Manipur State Film Awards 2022 has accepted entries from censored films in 2020 and 2021 as the COVID-19 pandemic also wreaked havoc on the Manipur film industry and the awards could not be arranged.
