The Star Wars movies are currently in limbo, but more information is coming out about the iconic franchise’s return to the big screen,
The Lucasfilm launch panel at star wars Celebration had plenty of announcements about the franchise’s future on Disney+, but there were no updates on any of the movies currently in the works. Studio president Kathleen Kennedy recently outlined a “roadmap” for getting star wars back in theaters, which includes a project of Thor: Love and Thunder director Taika Waititi. While Waititi’s film was first announced in December 2020, not much is known about what the story will involve, who will lead the cast, or when production will begin. However, Kennedy revealed when the mystery film is set to hit theaters, and it’s surprisingly not too far off.
In an interview with Total Film at star wars Celebration, Kennedy has confirmed that Waititi’s project is next star wars film online. While Lucasfilm’s president said an exact release date has yet to be set, the film is slated for a late 2023 premiere. star wars sequel trilogy (the force awakens, The Last Jediand The Rise of Skywalker) all released in the month of December, so while Kennedy hasn’t officially said as much, a December 2023 release of the Waititi movie would be in line with what Lucasfilm has been doing for the past few years. Should the film be released within this time frame, production should begin in the near future. star wars movies require a significant amount of special effects work in the background, and many big-budget movies have been delayed recently due to clogged VFX pipelines. Lucasfilm will have to pay attention to the post-production process if it wants Waititi’s film to hit the mark.

As for what Waititi’s film will entail, it looks like Lucasfilm is still in the planning stages of what it wants the future of Waititi’s film to be. star wars be. Kennedy told Total Film there was no hesitation in moving the story beyond the Skywalker saga, but it takes a lot of effort to build an entirely new narrative. While Lucasfilm is primarily focused on the variety of streaming series being developed for Disney+, Kennedy assures that there are many discussions going on around the state of star wars on the big screen:
“As we leave the [Skywalker] saga, we have all this great and exciting work going on on the television side that informs so much about where we are going. We want to be very intentional about this. And we’re working with great talent – people who care so much about what the next iteration of Star Wars is and getting people back into theaters, so we can really go out with a bang. It’s important to us.”
In addition to Waititi’s secret film, Thieves Squadron by wonder woman Director Patty Jenkins remains in development, but likely won’t see the light of day until 2024 at the earliest. Earlier this month, Kennedy said Lucasfilm still plans to work with The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson once again when his schedule thins out. MCU mastermind Kevin Feige would also produce a star wars project which is written by Loki and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness scribe Michael Waldron, but this story is being put together. For now, Waititi is in the circle on deck with the possibility of reinvigorating the star wars film franchise.
