Director Prashanth Neel’s KGF: Chapter 2 broke the inhibitions that had plagued the Kannada film industry for a long time. Starring Yash in the lead, it’s a sequel to the 2018 crime drama. The franchise tells the story of an ambitious young boy, whose insatiable appetite for power and money takes him to the mines of gold of Kolar, which are ruled with an iron fist by a very dangerous and ruthless family.
The first part showed Yash’s Rocky taking over the mines after a bloody battle, the second part showed how the hero fends off his rivals to protect the country’s most valuable land. Benefiting from the good word-of-mouth and significant box office gains generated by the first part, KGF 2 opened to an overwhelming response across the world.
According to business analyst Taran Adarsh, the film has so far grossed Rs 280.19 crore in its Hindi market. [#Jersey]…expect significant growth on [second] Saturday and Sunday… Will join the club ₹ 300 cr on [second] Sat Sun… [Week 2] Fri 11.56 cr. Total: ₹280.19 cr. # Indian Affairs. #Hindi.”
And in the process, it has set a series of new milestones and opened up several opportunities for the Kannada film industry to expand its market.
Here are the 6 main milestones achieved by KGF 2.
The most expensive Kannada film of all time
The greater the risk, the greater the reward. The filmmakers went bankrupt while producing KGF: Chapter 1. It was declared by Yash as the costliest film ever produced in Kannada cinema. While the filmmakers have always been hesitant to reveal the actual budget, several reports claim that the making of Chapter 1 cost the producers around Rs 80 crore. And the producers incurred a cost of Rs 100 crore to make Chapter 2. These figures are unprecedented in the Kannada film industry, which mainly produces mid-budget films.
The biggest launch ever
Once again propelled by the popularity of KGF 2 and aggressive marketing by producers led by Yash and Prashanth, KGF 2 was gave the biggest launch ever for a Kannada film. It was released on no less than 10,000 screens worldwide. The film was available in several versions on approximately 6,500 screens, which is one of many firsts for a Kannada film. Traditionally, even big star movies have very limited release outside of Karnataka. Bollywood star Shahid Kapoor’s New Jersey exit has been postponed to avoid a clash with KGF 2. Without Vijay’s Beast, KGF 2 would have had more screens in the south.
Opening of Rs 100 crore
KGF 2 became the very first Kannada movie to collect over Rs 100 crore on its opening day. And that’s no small feat. The film grossed over Rs 134 crore in India alone on its release day. And the movie went on to register a business of Rs 100 crore for the next three days as well. Within four days of its release, the film the global collection crossed the Rs 500 crore mark.
First Kannada film to break box office records in Hindi market
It was earlier reported that the collection of KGF 1 of its Hindi version was around Rs 40 crore. And the Hindi version of KGF 2 debuted at the box office by collecting over Rs 53 crore, breaking opening day records held by other big-budget Bollywood films. Prior to KGF 2, Hrithik Roshan’s War and Aamir Khan’s Thugs of Hindostan held the top two spots in the list of movies with the biggest opening day collection. While War collected Rs 51 crore, Thugs of Hindostan earned Rs 50 crore. Now there is a new benchmark for Hindi superstars at the box office.
Record opening in neighboring states
KGF 2 received enthusiastic reception not only in Karnataka and the heartland of Hindi, but it also took the box office by storm in other parts of the southern states of India. According to AndhraBoxOffice.com, the gross collection of KGF 2 in Telugu states exceeded Rs 77 crore, which is similar to the collection of films with Telugu superstars. Although Beast is playing in cinemas, KGF 2 has made a dent in the Tamil Nadu box office since day one. The film was released on over 300 screens in the state, with the majority of screens going to Beast. But, by the end of the first weekend, the number of screens had increased considerably. In the first four days, the film earned over Rs 30 crore at the box office. Kerala, which is also a bastion of Vijay’s fame, gave KGF 2 an unprecedented reception at the box office. The film’s opening day collection was pegged at over Rs 7 crore, becoming the biggest in the state.
World’s Best Second Film
KGF 2 not only had a dream run at the box office in India. It debuted at number 2 in the world, according to data provided by Comscore. With over $71 million (Rs 552 crore) in its prize pool at the end of the first weekend, it’s second only to Hollywood’s Fantastic Beasts: Secrets of Dumbledore.
