The Society of LGBTQ Entertainment Critics (GALECA) unveiled its nominations for the 2022 Dorian Awards on Tuesday, which honor the best in mainstream and independent cinema.
Jane Campion’s western drama The power of the dog leads the pack with nine total nominations, including Best Picture, Best LGBTQ Picture and Best Director. Animation Film To run away received five nominations, along with a 1920s racial drama Who passed and Steven Spielberg West Side Story.
In the Best Motion Picture Performance category, which is gender neutral, nominees include Kristen Stewart for spencerAndrew Garfield for Tick, tick… Boom! and Benedict Cumberbatch for The power of the dog.
“You could say that the films and performances chosen by members of our society are a reflection of what appeals to the whole fashionable Queer and Trans community,” said GALECA President Monika Estrella Negra, in a press release. “As our representation grows in the industry and beyond, expect the Dorian Awards to continue to shine a light on the importance and excitement of having a diverse critical outlook on film. a lot of work to do to advance a variety of voices and images that are often overlooked and invisible.
The non-profit organization GALECA was created in 2009 to celebrate the achievements of film and television. It includes more than 350 journalists, broadcasters and critics working for media in the United States and abroad.
