Members of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA) meet on Sunday to vote for the best film of their year. The group will begin to deliberate on winners in 14 categories, honoring one winner and one runner-up.
LAFCA named Steve McQueen’s Small Ax as Best Picture with Chloe Zhao’s Nomadland as the finalist. The two films switched places, with the Best Director category going to Zhao while McQueen was the runner-up.
Los Angeles critics picked the eventual Best Picture winner last year Parasite as his choice for the best picture. The director of this film, Bong Joon Ho, won the award for best director.
Other big winners included Promising young womanCarey Mulligan won the Best Actress award while the late Chadwick Boseman won the Best Actor award for his role in Ma Rainey’s black stockings.
The organization presented the New Generation Award to Radha Blank, director, screenwriter and star of The 40-year-old version. Meanwhile, LAFCA has awarded Career Achievement Awards to Hou Hsiao-Hsien and Harry Belafonte, with 106 years Norman Lloyd receiving the first Legacy Award.
“We are delighted to honor Steve McQueen’s unprecedented, resonant and masterful ‘Small Ax’ quintet of themed films,” LAFCA President Claudia Puig said in a statement. “And we are also honored to recognize the artistry of a group of wonderfully diverse and extremely talented award-winning filmmakers. Particularly noteworthy in a year when the film industry has taken a hard hit, our winners reflect extraordinary achievements. “
Awards season has been in stall mode due to the coronavirus pandemic, but the New York Film Critics Circle kicked off on Friday by awarding the A24s First cow like his best feature film. LAFCA’s vote date is pretty much on schedule; last year’s rally was on December 8. The 2021 Oscars are April 25, the last date for the ceremony, which pushed back the entire congratulatory parade.
