Now in its fourth year, the Music City Film Critics Association has released its list of nominations for 2022. Jane Campion’s Western The power of the dog leads the way with 10, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay – with Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst earning nominations for their roles.
The Best Film category shows the varied interests of the association. He understands Belfast, go! Go on, Dunes, West Side Story, Licorice Pizza and CODA. With Campion, Steven Spielberg (West Side Story), Paul Thomas Anderson (Licorice Pizza), Denis Villeneuve (Dunes) and Kenneth Branagh (Belfast) are up for Best Director.

2021 has seen some incredible performances from women, and the Best Actress category is packed with talent: Alana Haim (Licorice Pizza), Jessica Chastain (Tammy Faye’s eyes), Kristen Stewart (spencer), Lady Gaga (Gucci House) and Olivia Colman (The lost girl).
Also worth noting: Ann Dowd is up for her supporting role in Massjust like Colman Domingo for his striking performance as Zolais a pimp. Mass – an intense drama that’s excellent if not enjoyable – is up for Best Screenplay, with Belfast, Licorice Pizza, The French Dispatch and, as stated above, The power of the dog. The lovely Woody Norman is nominated in the Best Young Actor category for his role in Go on! Go on.
The association includes more than 30 professional film critics working in or near Nashville, including myself and several Stage reviews. The winners will be announced on January 25. See the full list of nominations below.
