R Balki’s trailer Chup once again shows R Balki as one of the most innovative and enterprising filmmakers in Indian cinema. Never afraid to break the glass ceiling, in his first film Cheeni Kum it portrayed a summer-winter love affair between Tabu and Amitabh Bachchan. In ShamitabAmitabh performed the ghost voice of a mute superstar.
R Balki’s Chup confronts film critics; says: “My film examines the impact of negative reviews on a film”
“The challenge is to do something completely unexpected. I like to surprise myself and the audience,” says Balki. The idea to make a film about how film criticism affects cinema came to Balki after his first film Cheeni Kum was trashed by some critics. The film then gained cult status.
“Why only my film? Classics like Guru Dutt Kagaz Ke Phool, by K Asif Mughal-e-AzamV Shantaram’s Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baje and Sholay by Ramesh Sippy were rejected by critics. My film examines the impact of negative reviews on a film,” says Balki.
