It’s been 15 years since Shimit Amin directed the sports drama Chak De! India hit the big screen. The film went on to make a lot of money at the box office (Rs 108 crore worldwide gross) against its relatively modest budget of Rs 20 crore. It won not only commercial success, but also excellent reviews for its screenplay, direction, and central performances. In fact, Chak De! India is still considered a superstar Shah Rukh Khanbest performance to date.

But did you know that once Shah Rukh himself had doubts about the success of Chak De? Speaking at the University of Edinburgh, the actor said after his first screening he thought Chak De! India was the “worst film” the team had made in their lifetime.

“We had some of the brightest minds that made the movie like Aditya Chopra, Jaideep Sahni, Shimit Amin. We had young girls learning to play hockey. Yash Chopra supported him. But when I saw the movie when it was first shown we all watched it and thought it was the worst movie we ever made in our life the girls didn’t know that because for them seeing themselves on screen for the first time was a big thing. So they were screaming and dancing irritatingly while the four of us sat there and cried. We had reached that stage of failure where you start telling people, listen, we did what we wanted . That’s what we set out to do and success and failure are fleeting and we’ll be back. It was really, really sad,” the actor said at the time.

Another interesting fact about the sports film is that it was first offered to another superstar, Salman Khan. During Sultan’s release, when Salman was asked this question, Bollywood’s quintessential “Bhai” answered it in a fun way. “Chak De! India was offered to me but I left it because even Shah Rukh Khan should be in a few great movies,” the actor said lightly.

However, in an even earlier interview right after the film’s release, Salman, while speaking with CNN, IBN, said he had issues with the climax of Chak De! India. “I had a problem with the climax of the movie. Adi (producer Aditya Chopra) told me that ‘I’m going to make it the biggest hit and you don’t know what you’re missing.’ lucky that Partner did well Chak De! India did very well Shah Rukh Khan did very well I was wrong and he (Aditya Chopra) did it the same way he did me told it, and I was like how can this work man, this can’t work,” Salman said with a chuckle.

Directed by Shimit Amin with a screenplay by Jaideep Sahni, Chak De! India released in 2007. Shah Rukh Khan played hockey coach Kabir Khan who is appointed to coach India’s women’s hockey team. Apart from SRK, he also played Vidya Malwade, Sagarika Ghatge, Shilpa Shukla, Chitranshi Rawat, Tanya Abrol, Shubhi Mehta, Masochon Zimik and Seema Azmi among others in key roles.
