10 Best Animated Movies That Were Overshadowed By A Disney Movie


When it comes to animated movies, most people think Disney is the only company making it work, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Many other animated films deserve as much praise. But, unfortunately, they are often overlooked when they share the spotlight with Disney projects.

Since Disney established itself as the quintessential animation studio, films from many other studios have been treated badly. A good example is that Disney has won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature 8 out of 10 times in the past ten years. Anyone interested in watching non-Disney animation should be careful. Sometimes it’s hard to get to know certain movies when Disney blockbusters are on the way.

10/10 Abominable found himself in the middle of a very busy Disney year

Directed by Jill Culton, Abominable follows the adventures of Yi, a teenager who comes across a child Yeti, who has been kidnapped by Mr. Burnish, a businessman trying to prove Yetis are real. In order to protect the Yeti, Everest and her family, she embarks on an adventure to stop the villain.

Abominable received generally positive reviews, even amid controversy over its political statements. However, it premiered in 2019, the same year Disney released toy story 4, Frozen IIand The Lion King. Considering this, Abominable was forgotten far too soon.

9/10 Fans loved The Mitchells Vs. The Machines but the Oscar went to Encanto

Currently streaming on Netflix, The Mitchells vs. the Machines revolves around the Mitchells, a complicated family who must save the world from an AI takeover. During their journey, they manage to heal many wounds in their relationships, eventually understanding that their love for each other will always be greater than anything.

The Mitchells vs. the Machines has charmed everyone on the internet, thanks to its wholesome queer portrayal. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough for the Academy, which instead awarded the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature to Encanto. In a sense, The Mitchells vs. the Machines was lost amid the “We’re not talking about Bruno” fever.

8/10 The road to El Dorado is a cultural must-see, but the first people are ignored

Kenneth Brannagh and Kevin Kline star in The road to El Dorado like Miguel and Tulio, two 16th-century tricksters, trying to make their way through a secret city full of gold. The film, directed by Eric “Bibo” Bergeron and Don Paul, sees them change their criminal ways.

When it premiered on March 31, 2000, The road to El Dorado only grossed $76 million worldwide, almost $15 million less than its total budget. Additionally, six months later, Disney released The Emperor’s New Routine, a similar film that became one of their most iconic works. Fortunately for Bergeron, The road to El Dorado has gained a cult following in recent years, especially thanks to memes. This film bombed but became a cult classic.


robots, by Chris Wedge, is a film set in a world where only sentient robots exist. Here, Rodney Copperbottom, a naïve budding inventor, tries to sell his inventions to Bigweld, a famous entrepreneur who supplies robots in spare parts. But, inadvertently, he finds himself in the middle of a plot against his hero.

Even its excellent cast — including Ewan McGregor, Halle Berry, and Robin Williams — didn’t save Robots from oblivion. The film had a decent fanbase in its day, but 20th Century Fox failed to market it as successfully as Disney marketed Chicken Little the same year.

6/10 The fantastic Mr. Fox lost the battle against Up

After a fox gives in to his thieving instincts, three farmers decide to kill him and other creatures of his kind. Fantastic Mr. Fox, by Wes Anderson, is a beautiful stop-motion film focused on wholesome topics, such as community and belonging.

Fantastic Mr. Fox is one of those movies that doesn’t decide if it’s for kids or adults. Its particular animation makes it an incredible project. Unfortunately, he also sends the wrong message by appearing more mature than he is, causing viewers to ignore him. Considering this, At the top beat him in theaters and at the Oscars.

5/10 Some people think Anastasia is a Disney movie

In 1997, 20th Century Fox produced its first animation, Anastasia. Starring Meg Ryan and John Cusack, the film tells a fictionalized version of the life of Grand Duchess Anastasia, daughter of Tsar Nicholas II. After losing her memory, Anastasia returns to court in a game of fate, which enrages her family’s enemies.

As Fox’s first animation, Anastasia is a valuable attempt to create a princess that does not belong to the Disney princesses. However, Fox did such a good job that things came full circle. Now the fans think Anastasia is actually a Disney princess. The film received less praise than Hercules, published a few months ago.

4/10 Moviegoers still can’t believe Ratatouille beats Persepolis

A film based on a comic book of the same name, Persepolis, by Marjane Satrapi, is a coming-of-age story set during the Iranian Revolution. The film features a semi-fictional depiction of Satrapi’s real-life childhood, focusing on how these political events affected his outlook on life.

Persepolis is an emotional film. Its powerful story, the perfect combination of a coming-of-age narrative and historical wartime documentation, and even its humor make it a pleasure to watch. Unfortunately, the Academy was unable to see its true worth at the time. At the 2008 Oscars, he lost the award to Ratatouille.

3/10 Wolfwalkers works on multiple levels of discourse, but it wasn’t enough for the Academy

The film is a coming-of-age story, but it’s also a reflection on Ireland’s socio-political conflicts in 1650 and an essay on the dichotomy between civilization and savagery. In addition, its animation is unique. Unfortunately, it didn’t get much traction. That year, everyone heard of Disney Soulbut few have watched this beautiful film.

2/10 The book of life reminds people too much of Coco

Diego Luna stars in the book of life as Manolo Sánchez, a budding bullfighter and musician in love with a woman engaged to his best friend. The film follows Manolo’s attempt to be with María, even after her death, and finds himself in the Land of Memories.

the book of life premiered in 2014 and received mostly positive reviews. It doubled Fox’s investment in the project and was nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature. However, in 2017, when coconut first, most people have forgotten about it. Since both films explore similar topics, it feels like there’s no room for them both in the media.

1/10 The Belleville triplets were ahead of their time


When a group of gangsters kidnaps her cycling-obsessed grandson Champion, Madame Souza travels from Europe to the United States to find him. Here she meets the singers Rose, Violette and Blanche, also known as the Belleville Triplets, who help her in her mission.

The Triplets of Belleville is an adult animated film that premiered in 2003. It was about 15 years before animations became the norm among adults. Of course, in a year where Brother Bear and The world of Nemo were fashionable, children hardly noticed it, and adults didn’t even consider it an option for them.
