“Dune” is the most nominated film at our 20th annual Gold Derby Film Awards, recognizing the best directors of 2021. The adaptation of Frank HerbertThe sci-fi novel has 11 bids, including Best Picture and Best Director (Denis Villeneuve). Watch the announcement video above. Scroll down for our full list of nominations in all 22 categories and vote for the winners now in our prediction center. You can create a free account here if you are not already a Gold Derby member. You have until Sunday February 27to get your votes.
Nearly 2,600 of our registered users voted for the nominations using ranked ballots, meaning passionate support was key to success. The sci-fi epic ‘Dune’ received bids for cinematography, director and adapted screenplay, but the lion’s share of its recognition came in craft categories that recognize the film’s many technical achievements. Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Production Design, Best Score, Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects.
But it’s not the only double-digit film. ‘The Power of the Dog’ and ‘West Side Story’ follow close behind with 10 nominations each, including Best Picture bids for both. They are also represented in the Best Breakthrough Performer race, where the “Power” actor Kodi Smit McPhee and the stars of “West Side Story” Ariana DeBose and Rachel Zegler are also named. These offers are not about a specific film, but rather about the actors’ overall breakthroughs in the industry. Still, “Power” and “West Side” are undoubtedly the main reasons for their recognition.
The other seven Best Picture nominees include expected Oscar contenders like “Belfast,” “CODA,” “Don’t Look Up,” “Licorice Pizza” and “tick, tick…Boom!” as well as some critically acclaimed foreign films, “Drive My Car” from Japan and “Titane” from France. Both of these films are also up for Best International Feature, with ‘Drive My Car’ winning an additional bid for its adapted screenplay while ‘Titane’ is up for Julia Ducournaudirection.
Check out the rest of our nominations below. Unlike the nomination round, the selection of the winners is done by a simple plurality vote. In almost all categories, you will choose only one candidate as your favorite, and the candidate with the most votes will win. For the best picture, you can rank your top three. But you can change your votes as often as you like before the February 27 deadline. No vote is final until the polls are officially closed. So do not hesitate to get started now to make your choice.
If you want to look back over the past two decades, all of the nominees and winners from the past 20 years are featured on each film’s and performer’s IMDb pages.
