Belfast secures 11 British Independent Film Awards nominations – with Van Morrison nominated for Best Music


Cathy Brady also landed two nominations for Fires.

The British Independent Film Awards have announced their 2021 nominations – with Belfast, Kenneth Branagh’s autobiographical film about a young boy growing up in The Troubles – receiving 11 nominations.

The film won a nomination for Best Actress for Caitríona Balfe, for Best Supporting Actress for Judi Dench, for Best Supporting Actor for Ciarán Hinds and a nomination for a Groundbreaking Performance for newcomer Jude Hill.

Belfast also received seven craft nominations, including Best Casting (Lucy Bevan, Emily Brockmann), Best Cinematography (Haris Zambarloukos), Best Editing (Úna Ní Dhonghaíle), Best Makeup and Hairstyle (Wakana Yoshihara), Best Production Design (Jim Clay) and another nomination for Charlotte Walter, winner of the 2020 BIFA Best Costume Design.

Van Morrison was nominated in the Best Music category – having contributed eight classic songs, as well as a short one, to Belfast.

Newly born filmmaker Cathy Brady, meanwhile, received two nominations for her film. Fires, for Best First Director (The Douglas Hickox Award) and Best First Writer.

The winners will be announced at the British Independent Film Awards ceremony on Sunday 5 December. See more nominations here.
