British Independent Film Awards in Gender Neutral Actor Categories – The Hollywood Reporter


The British Independent Film Awards (BIFA) are moving to gender-neutral performance categories and adding a new category of first feature documentary director. He also divides his musical honor into two categories.

“Marking the 25th year of the awards with a shake-up of traditional performance categories, BIFA will present five acting awards which celebrate and reward outstanding acting talent showcased in independent British film,” organizers said on Tuesday. “The new performance categories are Best Main Performance, Best Supporting Performance, Best Joint Main Performance – for two (or exceptionally three) performances that are the focus of the film – and Best Ensemble. The Breakthrough Performance award established by BIFA, sponsored by Netflix, remains unchanged and completes the new series of awards. This final award has always been gender neutral.

BIFA Directors Amy Gustin and Deena Wallace said: “We are very pleased to be able to launch BIFA’s new and expanded awards categories, which will more fully capture the range of outstanding performance and acting talent in British independent film. and allow us to celebrate even more talent than ever before.”

Additionally, BIFA is adding the new ‘Best Debut Director – Feature Documentary’ category, which will sit alongside the Douglas Hickox Award for Best Debut Director, sponsored by BBC Film, which will now be reserved for fiction feature films.

Meanwhile, the Best Music award, which previously recognized both original composition and music supervision, will be separated into categories of best original music and best music supervision.

BIFA also welcomed new members to its Board of Directors. They are producer and head of Home Team, Dominic Buchanan; Carmen Thompson, cultural curator for We Are Parable and producer at Aya Films; and Tim Platt, Head of Marketing and Audience Growth at the British Film Institute.

Nominations for BIFA 2022 will be revealed on Thursday, November 3. The ceremony will take place on Sunday, December 4.
