the Chicago Film Critics Associationthe Chicago-area print, online and broadcast critics group that celebrates the art of film and film criticism, today announces the winners of the People’s Choice Award at the conclusion of the 9th Annual Chicago Critics Film Festival.

Selected Audiences Closing Night Presentation I LOVE MY FATHER as winner of the People’s Choice Award for Narrative Feature Films; the film was sold out as the festival wrapped up May 19 at the historic Music Box Theater in Chicago.

Besides, 2nd CHANCEthe story of Richard-Davidthe inventor of the concealable bulletproof vest, received the Audience Award for Documentary, while two short films won the Audience Award in each program: MY DUDUŚdirected by Tom Krawczykand THE PAIN OF MICHAEL THOMPSONdirected by Haley Elizabeth Anderson and Kyle Thrash.

The ninth edition of the festival also had the biggest crowd yet, proving moviegoers are ready and eager to return to in-person screenings and celebrate the best new films premiering in Chicago. Special guests this year included filmmaker Cooper Raiff with opening night selection CHA CHA TRUE SMOOTH; documentary filmmaker Stephane Forbes with HOLD YOUR FIRE; filmmakers Kristen Abate and Steven Tanenbaum from RIGHT UP AND FLY RIGHT; a star-studded closing party with the filmmaker James Morosini and with Patton Oswalt, Amy Landecker and Claudia SulewskI’m here for I LOVE MY FATHER; and much more.

The Chicago Critics Film Festival presents an annual selection of acclaimed films chosen by members of the Chicago Film Critics Association, a combination of recent favorites and as yet unreleased works from a variety of filmmakers, from Academy Award winners to newcomers. come talented. It is the only current example of a large group of film critics organizing its own festival. The tenth edition of the festival will return in May 2023.
