CAIRO – April 27, 2022: The International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) has announced the Critics’ Jury for the 75th Cannes Film Festival, which will be held from May 17-28.
The jury is chaired by the Egyptian critic Ahmed Shawky and includes nine members from different continents of the world.
Critics Mariola Wiktor from Poland will participate in the jury, in addition to Emanuel Levy from the United States, Simone Sorana from Italy, Jihan Bougrain from Morocco, Bidan Ribeiro from Bangladesh, Youssoufa Halidou Haruna from Niger, in addition to the two French critics, Nathalie Chevalier and Magali van Reeth.
The jury is the oldest and largest, organized by the International Federation of Film Critics, the international organization that brings together film critics from around the world. It dates from 1925.
Its operating system during the Cannes Film Festival is based on the distribution of the nine members into three sub-commissions, each awarding a different prize.
This is the first time that an Egyptian critic has chaired this prestigious committee at the biggest film festivals in the world, but it is not the first time that an Egyptian critic has taken part in the jury.
Since the establishment of the Egyptian Film Critics Association and joining the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI), many Egyptian critics have participated as committee members, including Samir Farid, Youssef Sharif Rizkallah, Fawzi Suleiman , Amir Al-Omari, Ahmed Atef, Safaa El-Leithi and Ramy Abdel Razek.
The Cannes Film Festival FIPRESCI Prize is the oldest prize in the history of the festival, having been launched with the first edition of the festival in 1946.
It continued as an annual tradition through which the International Federation of Film Critics highlighted the most important international film experiences.
Throughout the history of the festival, many film industry legends have won the FIPRESCI award, including Andrei Arsenyevich Tarkovsky, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Francis Ford Coppola, among others.
