As a reminder, European feature films are eligible for the European Film Awards which, among other criteria, had their first official screening between June 1, 2021 and May 31, 2022 and have a European director (exceptions can be made by the Council if a director not to be European “provided they have European or similar refugee status or have lived in Europe and worked in the European film industry for at least five consecutive years”). In addition, the selection is based on the European Film Academy’s diversity and inclusion standards (read here).

With this announcement, the first step of the three-step award procedure is complete. In the coming weeks, the 4,400 members of the European Film Academy will start watching the shortlisted films and after the final announcement of all the films, will vote on the nominations in the feature film categories European Film, European Director, European Actor, European Actress and European Film Screenwriter as well as for nominations in the European Documentary category. Based on the votes of the participating members, the nominations will be made public on November 8, 2022, during the Seville European Film Festival. Members of the European Film Academy will then vote for the winners.

In addition to voting, selected films will be considered for Excellence Awards in the categories European Cinematography, European Editing, European Production Design, European Costume Design, European Makeup and Hairstyling, European Original Score, European Sound, and European Visual Effects. which will be determined by a jury of eight members made up of representatives of the various art professions. As usual, there will be no nominations in these categories.
