Jesse Eisenberg is set to play a Sasquatch in a new live-action film from the Zellner Brothers. Eisenberg is best known for playing narcissistic billionaires, like his portrayal of Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justicefuture narcissistic billionaires like Mark Zuckerberg in The social networkand all the neurotic men in movies like zombieland series and The end of the tour. The actor is also an accomplished playwright and has recently branched out into directing. His film debut When you’re done saving the world, is based on Eisenberg’s novel of the same name and stars Julianne Moore and Finn Wolfhard as mother and son. The film premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival.
The Zellner brothers also hail from the world of Sundance, who have mostly focused on writing and doing small independent business. Their latest film, a subversion of westerns and the ‘girl in distress’ narrative, titled Damsel, featured Robert Pattinson and one of his weird accents. Eisenberg first met the brothers when he co-starred alongside David Zellner in the satirical dark comedy The art of self defensethat Nathan Zellner’s executive produced.
Eisenberg talked about his upcoming collaboration with the Brethren to Variety at the Sarajevo Film Festival while promoting When you’re done saving the world, which will be screened there. The actor was nothing if not fully enthusiastic for his quirky new role which will see him truly fade away as Sasquatch. Check out what he has to say below:
“The next movie I’m doing is the Zellner Brothers. It’s just these brilliant directors I’ve wanted to work with for a long time, and I’m playing a Sasquatch. Full makeup. Full body hair. No lines – I grunt, but no lines – and I’m then I can not wait to be there.”
While this seems like a left-field pick for Eisenberg, it’s definitely in the wheelhouse of the Zellner brothers. The brothers have a long-standing love for the elusive ape-like cryptid. In 2011, Sundance screened the duo’s short film Birth Diary Sasquatch 2, which shows Bigfoot giving birth slowly in a tree before washing their baby in a stream. Even Zellner Bro’s YouTube bio features their love, describing them as “Sasquatch fanatics since they were kids” who “consider the Sasquatch a friend, but also acknowledge their “unhealthy and unrealistic desire to pet and cuddle wild animals.”‘” Between Hulu documentaries, low-budget horror films and a Discovery+ special where the son of Ozzy Osbourne and Jason Mewes from Jay and Silent Bob renowned search for the hairy cryptid, Bigfoot remains a fascinating subject for people. While living out of the spotlight, Bigfoot never strayed from people’s minds and imaginations.
There’s no word yet on plot details for the project, or if the character could actually be part of The Zellner Bro’s upcoming sci-fi flick. Alpha Gang, which stars Jon Hamm, Mackenzie Davis and Steven Yeun. Wherever Eisenberg’s Sasquatch appears, it’s an interesting departure for the actor. His voice and mannerisms are the most instantly recognizable parts of him, so stripping them down and hiding under extensive makeup and prosthetics could allow him to unleash an alien, more playful side than his usually bottled-up characters allow him to portray. Who knows, though, if playing a Sasquatch will Jesse Eisenberg more reclusive than he was on the set of The social networkor less.
