While the latest episode in the Matrix franchise may have missed the mark of some critics, offscreen Keanu Reeves apparently can’t hurt.
Earning a reputation as one of Hollywood’s most beloved actors due to his humble demeanor and private personality, it’s safe to say that Keanu Reeves is universally adored.
With its reintroduction into the limelight with the recent release of Matrix resurrections, stories of his generosity also continued to be revealed.
“Hollywood’s Ultimate Introvert” has been a dedicated philanthropist throughout his career, even founding his own private cancer charity to help cancer patients and seek treatment.
Recently, however, it was reported that Reeves had donated 70% of his Matrix first installment fee to leukemia research.
The report, from LadBible, noted that Keanu received $ 10 million upfront for the 1999 sci-fi phenomenon, before earning an additional $ 35 million when the film became a box office blockbuster.
According to the report, that means he donated a total of $ 31.6 to leukemia research.
But Keanu Reeves has a deeply personal attachment to the fight against cancer.
In 1991, before her career really began, Keanu’s younger sister Kim was herself diagnosed with leukemia and battled it for a decade before going into remission.
While living with the type of blood cancer, Keanu was his sister’s primary caregiver.
This meant that the big budget suites The matrix were delayed because he sold his house and got closer to his sister to be with her when she needed him the most.
Keanu and Kim were especially close during their formative years, having turned their lives around on several occasions, living in Hawaii, Australia, New York and Canada as their teens.
Before losing Kim in such tragic circumstances, he said in an interview at the time, “She’s always been there for me, you know. I’ll always be there for her.”
Several years later, he founded his own charity to support people with leukemia and cancer research, without attaching his name to donations to keep him private and away from his fame.
In 2009, during an interview with Ladies House Journal he mentioned it for the first time.
“I have a private foundation that’s been around for five or six years, and it helps a few children’s hospitals and cancer research,” Reeves revealed. “I don’t like putting my name on it, I just let the foundation do what it does.
Despite the tragedies that have befallen him, Reeves maintains his calm, upbeat, and caring attitude towards life. Hollywood needs more characters like him.
After being asked by presenter Stephen Colbert in 2019 about what happens after death, Keanu replied, “I know those who love us will be missed.”
With the incredible work he continues to do for the charities he holds dear, he will continue to make his sister proud. there is no doubt.
