As Hollywood eagerly awaits this Tuesday’s Oscar nominations, all signs continue to point to a strong showing for “The Power of the Dog.” Jane Campion’s western, adapted from Thomas Savage’s novel of the same name, continues to receive rave reviews for its minimalist script and engaged performances from its cast.
Benedict Cumberbatch earned particular praise for the acting method he used in his performance, going so far as to practice bull castration and smoking so many cigarettes on set that he poisoned himself with nicotine . The effort was certainly worth it, as his performance as brutal rancher Phil Burbank is central to the film and propelled it to Oscar buzz.
The London Critics’ Circle Film Awards ceremony was held in London on Sunday evening and the evening was dedicated to ‘The Power of the Dog’. The film was named Film of the Year and Jane Campion took home the Director of the Year trophy. The film’s cast was also honoured, with Benedict Cumberbatch winning Actor of the Year and Kodi Smit-McPhee won Supporting Actor of the Year.
While “The Power of the Dog” was the big winner of the night, “Drive My Car” also performed well, being honored for its screenplay and winning Foreign Language Film of the Year. Tilda Swinton and Andrew Garfield won British/Irish Actress of the Year and British/Irish Actor of the Year for Lifetime Achievement in 2021, respectively. Keep reading for the list full of winners.
