Top Gun: Maverick received unanimous critical acclaim in the sequel’s early reviews.
The Hollywood star would have made a triumphant return as Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the long-awaited 1986 sequel Superior gunand critics praise her performance in the “barrier-breaking sequel”, as Varietywrites Peter Debruge in his review.
But according to Debruge, Maverick doesn’t rely on being The Tom Cruise Show, and instead involves “perfectly coordinated teamwork between six pilots, reminiscent of the group aerial battle that bonded Iceman (Val Kilmer) and Maverick in the original movie”.
IGN’s Matt Donato calls the film “the Superior gun sequel purists will rave about it,” praising it as “an off-limits blast of afterburner smoke and thrills sure to please audiences looking for a classic summer blockbuster.”
“If Maverick can’t quite match Impossible mission – Fallout for sheer kinetics and well-orchestrated awe, this long-delayed sequel does more to clarify what it means than anything Cruise has ever done,” writes David Ehrlich for IndieWire, giving the film an A grade. reason for that is simple: Tom Cruise is Maverick, and Maverick is Tom Cruise.”
In Ross Bonaime’s review for Collider, he gives Maverick an A grade and says the action movie “is the rare case where it absolutely deserves all the massive praise” and “improves the original in every way imaginable.” .
Adds Pullman, 29, “Each of the pilots has a story of him talking about what he thinks is great about them, what they can do with that quality. He basically tells you how Tom Cruise became Tom Cruise.”
