New Delhi: The 68th National Film Awards held here on Friday marked a proud moment for Keralites as singer Nanchamma, actors Aparna Balamurali and Biju Menon received the awards. The Malayalam film industry won eight awards, including Best Director and Best Film.
Nanchamma, an Attappadi tribal woman from Kerala who made her film debut with ‘Ayyappanum Koshiyum’ won the award for Best Playback Singer. The audience at the awards ceremony greeted Nanchamma with a round of applause as she took the stage to receive the award from Draupadi Murmu, the President of India.
Aparna Balamurali received Best Actress award for Tamil film ‘Soorarai Pottru’.
Meanwhile, Biju Menon also arrived to receive the Best Supporting Actor award for his portrayal of “Ayyappan”, a hardcore policeman seeking revenge, in Ayyappanum Koshiyum.
Meanwhile, director Sachy aka Sachidanandan KR won Best Director for the same film posthumously. This is the film’s second major award.
‘Thinkalazhcha Nishchayam’ won the award for best Malayalam language film.
Meanwhile, Kollywood star Suriya and Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn shared the Best Actor award for “Soorarai Pottru” and “Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior” respectively.
