Norman Lear awarded the Legend Award by the African American Film Critics Association


Norman Lear receives her flowers. The television icon will be officially honored with the Legend Award by the African American Film Critics Association.

To say that Lear is television royalty would be an understatement. The man behind great successes in the television landscape, the producer and writer helped create and develop Good time, The Jeffersons, Everything in the Family and more. The African American Film Critics Association’s “TV Honors” celebration is slated to air virtually in August, and at the event, Lear will receive the Legend Award.

Lear shared in an official statement by Deadline, “As I reflect on the last 99 years of my life, I think of all those responsible for helping me get this far. From the Tuskegee Airmen who flew by my side in WWII to the brilliant actors, writers, producers and creators who made me laugh in places I never knew existed throughout my career.

He went on to say how lucky he feels in his life and even honors some of the biggest black names in entertainment he has been able to collaborate with and spend time with.

He shared, “I’ve said this many times before – laughter adds time to your life. And have the chance to spend time with people like Kenya Barris, Dave Chappelle, Laverne Cox, Ava DuVernay, Jamie Foxx, Redd Foxx, Marla Gibbs, Sherman Hemsley, Richard Pryor, Shonda Rhimes, George Wallace, Kerry Washington, and another laureate Wanda sykes – to name a few – I plan to live another 99 years. I thank the AAFCA for this great honor. I couldn’t be more proud to be in the company of such incredible talent.

Co-founder and president of AAFCA Gil robertson Also shared a statement regarding Lear’s legacy and career.

“Norman Lear’s work had such a huge impact that the creators still draw on it to this day. This award recognizes the legacy and impact of Mr. Lear. It’s a footprint whose impact will extend far beyond our lives, ”said Robertson. “Using the powerful medium of television he really made the world we live in a much better place.”

“He made us think about family, poverty, wealth, racism and more while making us laugh. And, at 99, he still does. It is a privilege for the AAFCA to present him with the Legend Award.

Lear joins Wanda Sykes, Michaela Coel, Naomi Ackie, and more from the already announced list of special winners. Sykes will receive the Special Achievement Salute to Excellence Award “for broadening the parameters of diversity and inclusion for black and LGBTQ communities”, by Variety.

Coel will win the 2021 AAFCA TV Honors Special Achievement Breakout Creative Award for his hit series, I can destroy you, while Ackie will receive the 2021 AAFCA TV Honors Special Achievement Horizon Award for his roles in Master of None and Small Ax.
