The 2022 Philadelphia Film Festival has announced its full lineup, including the opening night film The Banshees of Inisherin by director Martin McDonagh and the documentary by Laura Poitras All the beauty and bloodshed.
The festival – which will take place in person from October 19 to 30 at the Philadelphia Film Center, the PFS Bourse Theater and the newly acquired PFS East – will present more than 130 films from 40 countries for its 31st edition. This includes world premieres of three films, North American premieres of two, and US premieres of two titles.
“This year’s program is one of our largest yet, which only reinforces the strength of the state of cinema today,” said Michael Lerman, Artistic Director and Senior Director of Programming. of the Philadelphia Film Society, in a statement. “Not only is the quality of the film extremely high, but we are thrilled to be able to bring bold, diverse and rebellious new stories to Philadelphia. With a strong showcase of documentary films as well as thought-provoking narratives, PFF31 truly highlights the urgent of the contemporary world in which we live.
The 2022 event will kick off on October 19 with the critically acclaimed Irish drama The Banshees of Inisherin, starring Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson in a story about two lifelong friends who must deal with the consequences of the abrupt end of their relationship. The festival will then host its closing screening of the Poitras documentary All the beauty and bloodshedwhich chronicles the life of famed photographer Nan Goldin and the fall of the Sackler pharmaceutical dynasty, on October 28.
“We couldn’t be more excited for this year’s festival as we are finally back in full. More than that, and as cliché as it sounds, we’re better than ever. Full theaters, more events, an incredible Festival lounge and a ton of special guests,” said J. Andrew Greenblatt, CEO and Executive Director of the Philadelphia Film Society, in a statement.
Centerpiece films include Glass directed by Rian Johnson and directed by Daniel Craig Onion: a mystery at loggerheads; by Noah Baumbach White noise with Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig; the star of Anne Hathaway, Jeremy Strong and Anthony Hopkins armageddon time; Sam Mendes Empire of Light, which stars Olivia Coleman and reunites him with cinematographer Roger Deakins; The Historical Drama of Chinonye Chukwu Until; and Elegance Bratton’s first feature film inspection.
Other notable screenings include the North American premiere of Rebelof Ms. Marvel and bad boys for life directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, and a special screening of the biopic directed by Daniel Radcliffe Bizarre: the story of Al Yankovic. Special event screenings include action hits RRR and a 35 mm projection of Magic Mike XXL.
This year, the festival — programmed and organized by the Philadelphia Film Society — is returning to an all-in-person event and expanding into a new theater, formerly known as the Ritz East. “Now known as PFS East, we are thrilled to bring this beloved theater back to life, a Festival staple,” said Greenblatt. “Not only that, between the use of PFS Est and PFS Bourse, we are creating a stronger Festival presence throughout the Old Town district.
