Raksha Bandhan Box Office Collection Day 11: Akshay Kumar’s film hugely disappoints, adds Rs 1 crore

The box office performance of Raksha Bandhan star Akshay Kumar was not at all impressive. After a slew of box office underperformers like Samrat Prithviraj, Shamshera, Jayeshbhai Jordaar and others, Bollywood’s dry spell doesn’t seem to be ending. On its opening day, Raksha Bandhan collected Rs 8 crore and faced a clash with Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha. Even though Raksha Bandhan received good reviews, it failed to attract audiences to theaters. Its box office collection plummeted throughout its second weekend. On day 11, the film collected Rs 42.94 crore, according to trade estimates.

Raksha Bandhan saw an early booking of 35,000 tickets sold for Day 1 at the box office with a total collection of approx. Rs 69 million. The film is produced by Zee Studios and director Aanand L Rai with an approximate budget of over Rs 70 crore. Raksha Bandhan got off to a lower than expected start at the box office, and it didn’t improve over time. On Sunday, August 21, the film barely managed to add Rs 1.40 crore, bringing the total box office collection to Rs 42.94 crore. Meanwhile, Raksha Bandhan had an overall Hindi occupancy of 14.60% on August 21.

Akshay Kumar has had three flops at Bell Bottom (August 19, 2021), Bachchhan Paandey (March 18, 2022) and Samrat Prithviraj (June 3, 2022) over the past year. His only hit during this period was Sooryavanshi (November 5, 2021), which was made on a production budget of around Rs 160 crore and earned a lifetime net collection of Rs 196 crore in India and Rs 295 crore of raw world collections.

IndiaToday.in gave Raksha Bandhan 2 out of 5 stars. Our review said: “Raksha Bandhan’s biggest problem is his writing. For a film that aims to convey a social message, the writing is not only sexist but extremely offensive, especially to the women in the film. When Akshay Kumar’s Lala jokingly calls one of her sisters with weight pulls out a “double decker,” you’re expected to laugh! calls one of his other darker-skinned sisters – “amavas ki raat. Sadly, those lines and punches are so regressive that even the writers of The Kapil Sharma Show would reject them!”

Directed by Aanand L Rai, Raksha Bandhan stars Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar. It also includes Sadia Khateeb, Sahejmeen Kaur, Smrithi Srikanth and Deepika Khanna. The film collides with Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha in theaters today, August 11. The film is produced by Zee Studios, Color Yellow Productions and Cape of Good Films and co-written by Himanshu Sharma and Kanika Dhillon.

The storyline follows Lala Kedarnath, the eldest and only brother of four sisters, who runs a chaat shop that was started by her father. Lala promises his frail mother on her deathbed that he will marry only after he takes responsibility for first marrying his sisters into proper homes. What follows is Lala’s relentless efforts to marry off her sisters while respecting her family values.
