The remake of “West Side Story,” which underperformed in its opening weekend, topped the 2021 Chicago Film Critics Association nominations announced Monday.
Steven Spielberg’s remake of the 1961 Jerome Robbins-Robert Wise classic led all other eligible films in earning 11 nominations for Best Picture, Director, Actors Mike Faist and Ariana DeBose, Adapted Screenplay, Art Direction/ production design, editing, cinematography, costume design and promising newcomer (DeBose and Rachel Zegler).
Director/adaptor Jane Campion’s western psychodrama “The Power of the Dog” earned eight nominations for best picture, direction, adapted screenplay, actors Benedict Cumberbatch and Kodi Smit-McPhee, cinematography, editing and music.
‘The Green Knight’ earned seven nominations, followed by ‘Drive My Car’, ‘Dune’ and ‘Licorice Pizza’ with six nominations each.
For the first time, the CACP’s most promising category of performers is made up entirely of women. They include DeBose and Zegler from “West Side Story”, Alana Haim (“Licorice Pizza”), Emilia Jones (“CODA”) and Rachel Sennott (“Shiva Baby”).
Created in 1990, the CFCA is made up of representatives of print publications and audiovisual media. The winners will be announced on December 15.
